Congratulations to the Maritime Leadership Certificate Program Class of 2027

On March 18, 2026, the Virginia Maritime Association proudly celebrated the graduation of the Maritime Leadership Certificate Program (MLCP) Class of 2026, marking the completion of a year-long journey of learning, collaboration, and leadership development. The program, launched in 2018, was created to give professionals a deeper understanding of Virginia’s maritime and logistics industries while strengthening the leadership skills needed to guide the industry forward. With the graduation of this seventh class, the MLCP network now includes 120 alumni across the Commonwealth’s maritime community.

Throughout the year, the Class of 2026 explored the many moving parts that make Virginia’s maritime economy work. Participants toured major facilities including the Virginia Inland Port and Norfolk International Terminals, observed offshore wind components staged at Portsmouth Marine Terminal, and experienced a pilot boat ride with the Virginia Pilot Association. They visited shipyards, logistics facilities, and cold storage operations, and saw firsthand how technology and innovation are shaping the industry through visits to the Virginia Digital Maritime Center and workforce training programs across the state.

The program also focused on leadership and collaboration. Through workshops and discussions, participants explored communication styles, leadership dynamics, and the importance of building trust within teams. One highlight included a hands-on exercise simulating the state budget process, giving participants a new appreciation for how policy decisions shape the maritime industry. The class also experienced the advocacy side of the industry during Maritime Day in Richmond, where they saw the power of industry voices coming together to represent Virginia’s port and supply chain community.

From tours of cutting-edge automation and offshore wind infrastructure to memorable moments like a haunted tour in Winchester and a lively improv workshop, the year created lasting friendships and a strong professional network. These shared experiences helped the class develop a deeper appreciation for how interconnected Virginia’s maritime industries truly are and how collaboration across sectors drives the Commonwealth’s maritime success.

The success of this program would not be possible without the dedication of those who guide and support it. Special thanks to Program Director Kate Meechan for leading another outstanding MLCP year and creating an experience that continues to shape the next generation of maritime leaders. The Virginia Maritime Association also extends its appreciation to the graduation sponsors, The Propeller Club Port of Norfolk and Host Agency, whose support helped make the celebration possible and recognize the accomplishments of the Class of 2026.

Looking Ahead: Welcoming the Class of 2027

Earlier that same day, the next chapter of the program began as the Maritime Leadership Certificate Program welcomed its newest cohort. The Class of 2027 officially launched their MLCP journey, beginning a year of exploration, leadership development, and industry engagement. As they start this experience, they join a growing network of maritime professionals committed to understanding the full scope of Virginia’s maritime economy and shaping its future.
